School choice proponent, first generation immigrant preaches grit, self-belief
The Heartlander: Adam Wittenberg: Watch: School choice proponent, first generation immigrant preaches grit, self-belief
Dr. Valeria Gurr, a first-generation immigrant and school choice advocate, says the key to success is perseverance and believing in yourself.
“My message to younger generations and Latinos is don’t give up,” she says.
“You’re going to face a lot of barriers in life, but don’t let that stop you, and also don’t stop yourself.”
Gurr, who holds a PhD, says school choice helps unlock students’ potential.
“What I also hear from other school choice students is that when they believe in themselves, they’re able to accomplish anything they want in life.”

New York:
Washington Times: Greg Lyakhov: Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’ offers students like me a lifeline [Paywall]
The United States faces a growing public education crisis, defined by declining outcomes and institutional resistance to reform. In New York, this failure is especially acute. Although New York spends more per student than any other state, its public schools continue to underperform, deny essential accommodations and restrict families’ ability to seek alternatives. President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act presents a powerful corrective. Embedded in this legislation is a federal version of the Educational Choice for Children Act, which would provide up to $5 billion annually in tax credits to donors who fund private scholarships for K-12 students. For many students, including me, Mr. Trump’s bill could be a path to justice.
Oklahoma:
OCPA: Ray Carter: Oklahoma ranked as a top 10 state in education choice
A new report ranks Oklahoma among the 10 best states in the nation for parental empowerment and educational choice. The 2025 Parent Power! Index, released by the Center for Education Reform (CER), analyzes educational opportunities state by state and highlights the success and failure of laws to ensure the availability of education that meets the needs of every child and family. . . . The report’s section on Oklahoma’s school-choice programs noted, “Going from nearly zero to 100 in a few short months, the state in 2023 enacted a universally available refundable tax-credit program giving families the opportunity to personalize their students’ education,” noting that process “resulted in thousands more opportunities created virtually overnight.”
